Kalli Bates Trenton High School Harold duCharme Scholarship 2011/2012
Kalli Bates is this year’s recipient of the Harold DuCharme Scholarship. She graduated from Trenton High School, where she excelled inside and outside of the classroom. Kalli embodies the qualities honored by the DuCharme Scholarship.
Mackenzie Biggert
Elaine and Roger Zatkoff Scholarship 2011/2012
Mackenzie Biggert is the recipient of one of two scholarships in honor of Roger and Elaine Zatkoff. He is a graduate of DeLa Salle Collegiate High School in Harrison Township. In high school, Mackenzie excelled in the classroom and in sport. He was an AP Scholar, President’s List, National Merit Commended Student and winner of several science and language awards. Also, of note, Mackenzie was captain of his Varsity Swimming Team, participated in Boy Scouts of America, and several school business and language clubs. He also displays a demonstrated work record during his high school years while also volunteering in the community.
Christopher J. Bonkowski Brother Rice High School Elaine and Roger Zatkoff Scholarship 2011/2012
Christopher Bonkowski graduated from Brother Rice High School and is the other recipient of the President’s Scholarship. He participated in Robotics, Track & Field, Cross Country, Quiz Bowl, Soccer and Model United Nations. He was a member of the National Honor Society, a National Merit Semifinalist, recipient of the American Association of Physics Teachers 2009 Outstanding Student of the Year award and numerous other awards and accolades. He also took and excelled in several Advanced Placement courses while at Brother Rice High School.
Ezron Bryson
Schmidt/Hunt Scholarship 2011/2012
Ezron Bryson graduated from Hofstra University in 2009 with a BS in Athletic Training, cum laude. He served as the treasurer for the Hofstra Athletic Training Society from 2007-2009. While at Hofsta he also volunteered as a Sunday School teacher and a high school football coach Ezron went on to an NFL internship as Seasonal Assistant Athletic trainer from 2009-2010. He is currently in the second year of Master’s of Arts in Sports Management in the School of Kinesiology.
Victor Chen Detroit Country Day High School Elaine and Roger Zatkoff Scholarship 2011/2012
Victor Chen is a recipient of one of the Elaine and Roger Zatkoff Scholarships. Victor graduated from Detroit Country Day High School with a sterling academic record. He participated in Quiz Bowl, Science Olympiad and the Varsity Soccer Team. He volunteered at Karmanos Cancer Institute, Penrickton Center for Blind Children, and Hand by Hand Education Foundation. Victor also served as a research volunteer during the summers at Wayne State University’s Department of Pathology. He is also an outstanding pianist.
Kevin Daniels Walled Lake Northern High School Frederick C Matthaei Scholarship 2011/2012
Kevin Daniels graduated from Walled Lake Northern High School. He participated in Student Council, Marching Band, Soccer, and Track and Field. He was also a member of the National Honor Society and the Spanish National Honor Society. He took and excelled in multiple Advanced Placement courses while at Walled Lake Northern, earning A's in each one. He is also very involved with his church's youth group, and does a mission trip each year with that group.
Brian Daniels Walled Lake Northern High School President's Scholarship 2011/2012
Brian Daniels is one of two recipients of the President’s Scholarship. Brian attended Walled Lake Northern High School. He participated in Varsity Swimming, Student Council, Band Solo and Ensemble, and many other extra-curricular activities. He compiled an impressive academic record as well, taking and succeeding in several advanced placement classes. His is also very involved in his church and volunteers for his time for other community related activities.
Steven Goldenthal Andover High School David J. Hallissey Memorial Scholarship 2011/2012
Steven Goldenthal is the recipient of the other David J. Hallisey Scholarship. Steven is a graduate of Andover High School, where he participated in National Honor Society, Quiz Bowl, Spanish Club, Junior Varsity Baseball, Staff Writer for school newspaper, The Shield, Student Mentor Program, and many other extra-curricular activities. He also achieved in the classroom, taking and excelling in several advanced placement courses. Steven also actively volunteered in the community, including American Red Cross.
Amanda Harris Farmington High School President's Scholarship 2011/2012
Amanda Harris is the recipient of the other President’s Scholarship. She is a graduate of Farmington High School, where she participated on the Varsity Golf Team (Captain), President and Founder of the Economics Club, President of Business Professionals of America Club, charter member of Steppingstone Magnetic Resonance Center summer program, Varsity Debate Team, and many for extra-curricular activities. She compiled an excellent academic record, including distinction as AP Scholar with Honor, selection for LEAD Business summer program and Economics for Leaders summer program, as well as All Area Girls Golf Team.
Joyce Jih Troy High School James H. LoPrete Scholarship 2011/2012
Joyce Jih is this year’s recipient of the James H. LoPrete Scholarship. During high school, Joyce participated in Synchronized Swimming, Chinese Club, Orchestra, Students Against Destructive Decisions, National Honor Society and many other extra-curricular activities. She also volunteered at Beaumont Hospital in the Medical Unit and Oncology Ward. Joyce also performed research at the Life Science Institute at the University of Michigan. She is a National Merit Semifinalist, recipient of the Harvard Prize Club Book Award, the American Chinese Association – Ray Young Scholarship, the CLASS National Essay Contest – Bronze Apple Award.
Avi King Undergraduate University of Michigan Women's Volleyball Manager Scholarship 2011/2012
Avi King is thrilled and honored to be the first recipient of the Women’s Volleyball Manager Scholarship. He plans to work hard in this role to help the team pursue a Big Ten Title. This position is important to Avi because it allows him to see the inner workings of a top 25 volleyball program. Avi eventually would like to become a coach himself. He played volleyball all throughout high school in California and held the position of team captain for two years. Avi applied to Michigan because of its academic excellence in engineering and with the hope of getting involved in the volleyball program.
Dave Lakin
Falk/Hatch Scholarship 2011/2012
David Lakin is honored to be the head manager of the 132nd Michigan Football Team and looks to do everything he can to help the Team in its pursuit of a Big Ten championship. David looks to complete his undergraduate degree this year, while concentrating in political science and history. Some of David's aspirations include attending law school and also expanding the scholarship opportunities to the rest of the hard working football managers.
Makayla McCoskey North Farmington High School David J. Hallissey Memorial Scholarship 2011/2012
Makayla McCoskey is this year’s recipient of one of two David J. Hallisey Scholarships. Makayla is a graduate of North Farmington High School, where she compiled an excellent academic record. She also participated in Theater, Student Senate/Class Board, and National Honor Society. Makayla is a National Merit Semifinalist, Madame Curie Top Math/Science Student Medalist, and recipient of several other awards. She also has performed an internship at Providence Hospital, participated on the Mayor’s Youth Council, plays the violin and guitar, writes songs, and serves as a group leader within a religious youth group.
Katie Mullins
Elaine and Roger Zatkoff Scholarship 2011/2012
Katie Mullins is the recipient of the other President’s Scholarship award. Katie is a graduate of Lakeview High School, where she participated as Vice President of the National Honor Society. Katie also tutored middle school students and worked as a manager at Cold Cow Ice Cream. In addition, Katie’s scholastic record is nothing short of stellar, as she was inducted into the Math, Spanish and English Honor Societies, while taking AP Chemistry, History and Calculus.
Max Olender Detroit Country Day High School Frederick C Matthaei Scholarship 2011/2012
Max Olender graduated from Detroit Country Day High School. He is the other recipient of a Frederick C. Matthaei Scholarship. Max participated in Varsity Soccer, Fencing Club, Environmental Club, Digital Filmmaking Club and the Cum Laude Society. He also actively participates in Boy Scouts of America, earning numerous leadership positions, including Eagle Scout. He also has been honored with numerous awards for his scholastic achievements.
Kayla R. Wizinsky Utica High School Elaine and Roger Zatkoff Scholarship 2011/2012
Kayla Wizinsky is this year’s recipient of one of two Elaine and Roger Zatkoff Scholarships. Kayla attended Utica High School. She also took classes at the Utica Center for Math, Science and Technology. She was a participant in the FIRST Robotics ThunderChickens team. She also participated in Varsity Cross Country, Marching Band, Rocket Club, National Honor Society, Girl Scouts, AYSO Soccer and volunteer time at the Detroit Medical Center. She took numerous Advanced Placement courses and earned several honors and awards during her high school career.
