Community Service Day at Hope Adult Shelter in Pontiac

Join your fellow alumni while giving back to the community at Hope Adult Shelter in Pontiac on Saturday, January 30, 2016, 9 am -1 pm. Hope Adult Shelter is located at 249 Baldwin Avenue, Pontiac, MI 48342 (just north of “The Loop” in downtown Pontiac).

Hope Adult Shelter provides year-round overnight shelter, dinner, triage healthcare, showers, and access to resources that can be a pathway out of homelessness. More information about this critical community resource can be found at http://www.hopewarmingpontiac.org/.

Last month the U of M Club of Greater Detroit worked with a small business called Closet Connections to donate and install a brand-new closet shelf and rack system at the shelter. This month, we will be organizing clothes in the new clothing closet at the shelter. The shelter regularly receives clean, gently used articles of clothing for its guests at the shelter, and these piles of clothing are in need of some “strategic planning.” Now we need 25 alum to sort, label, fold, and place the clothing on these new shelves.

Event information and RSVP link will be posted at http://alumni.umich.edu/clubs/detroit/events. As of today (1/10/16) the RSVP link is not posted, but will be posted soon (most likely later this week) by the Alumni Association. Please sign up for this event by Friday, January 29th, 2016.

Arrive between 8:45 and 9:00 am. Parking is available in Hope Adult Shelter’s paved lots on the south and north sides of the building. Hope Adult Shelter’s direct phone number is (248) 499-7345.

We will break-out in work teams of 2-3 people to sort, label, fold, and shelf clothing items and personal hygiene kits.  Some work can be performed while sitting, but please wear comfortable shoes in anticipation of being on your feet.

U of M club volunteers are welcome to bring donated items to the work day. The Shelter accepts clothing for both men and women (but not children). New white socks, new or gently used warm winter clothing, including snow boots are really needed by the shelter.
